Lemonade (LMND) Q2 2026 Earnings Review

Lemonade (LMND) Q2 2026 Earnings Review

Lemonade offers renters, home, auto, pet & life insurance in the USA and parts of Europe. The company’s AI-native foundation routinely enables real-time claims management and cuts out hefty fixed costs associated with legacy business models. This enables it to routinely outcompete substitutes on price. It builds on this edge by obsessively iterating on its underwriting algorithms to ensure accurate underwriting. This has enabled brisk top-line scaling with modest cost growth and coinciding margin improvement for a couple years now.

a. Key Points

  • Reiterated path to profitability.
  • CFO change.
  • Pet inflation is impacting loss ratios a bit.
  • Structural cost leads are growing.

b. Demand

  • Slightly beat in force premium (IFP) estimate & slightly beat guidance.
  • Beat gross earned premium (GEP) guidance by 0.8%.
  • Beat revenue estimate by 1% & beat guidance by 2%.
  • Beat customer estimates.
    • Growth is coming from a stable blend of new customers and cross-selling. That’s expected to continue. They do not expect any slowing in customer growth.

As a reminder, Lemonade’s revenue growth is currently being boosted by lower Y/Y rates of ceded premiums. As the company grows more confident in its underwriting quality, they keep getting more comfortable with retaining more of their book rather than offloading it to reinsurance partners. This means they’re keeping more revenue on the same base of premiums, which leads to easy Y/Y revenue comps and an amplified revenue growth rate. IFP and GEP are more important metrics in terms of gauging structural growth potential. They each exclude this noise and also continue to accelerate back above LMND's 30% target.

c. Profits & Margins

  • Beat 35% GPM estimate by nearly 4 points. This is thanks to outperforming loss ratios as underwriting quality continues to shine.
    • Net loss ratio (NLR) enjoyed 5 points of favorable prior period development as costs turned out to be lower than expected. This is another reason why it's best to focus on annualized loss ratios.
    • The ongoing removal of low quality home plans is also helping with reserve needs and loss ratios.
  • Beat EBITDA estimate by 11% & beat guidance by 11%.
  • Met -$0.56 GAAP EPS estimate. GAAP net loss dollars didn’t materially improve Y/Y despite the margin improving via higher revenue. This is because LMND is lapping a tax refund from Q2 2025 that propped GAAP net income up. Excluding this, the net loss shrank by another 22% Y/Y.
  • Veterinary service inflation led to pet loss ratios worsening Y/Y. Despite this, Lemonade delivered rapid segment growth. This is partially because it was better prepared with rate filing updates than it was a few years ago when inflation hit its other businesses. They learned and improved.

d. Balance Sheet

  • $1.2B in cash & equivalents; $330M regulatory surplus vs. $290M Q/Q.
  • No debt.
  • 4.8% Y/Y dilution related to executive equity awards.
